Hearing is far from just listening to sound waves which our ears collected. Hearing is understanding what your brain has processed. The bible in the book of revelation used this phrase often "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith unto the churches". So Christ knows the essence of hearing and also understanding.
  Faith deals with not seeing but believing, so also does hearing deals with understanding. The Bible also says be slow to speak and fast to hear. Listening is a very great gift from our creator.
   Studies have shown that anyone who listens very well is a very good writer. For us to be able to walk with Christ just as he said in Ps 84:11, we must listen very well and understands whatever He says to us. Samuel was not able to understand what he was hearing thats why he was not able to identify the voice of God. Until we can understand we are far from people that can hear.
  
TIPS ON HOW TO FREE YOURSELF FROM SINS
1. The soul and the spirit are two different entity. The spirit learns from our physical experience but the soul must be subjected to constant teaching before it adapts to something new. We are born into a world of sin so our soul and spirit is corrupted with sin (Rom 3:23). But as we hear the word of God, our spirit tends to change but our soul remains reluctant to change. But constant hearing of the word and doing (James 1:22) what it says tends to force the soul to change.
2. We must always say some Bible verses we read to ourself when we are relaxing. This makes the soul to be addicted to these words and it will want to practice them.
3. We must to listen to stuffs that will edify our soul and spirit. For example, messages from preachers and gospel songs. Understand what these preachers are saying by verifying them in the Bible.
4. Trust in God

It is very easy to be swayed away by what we hear. So be careful what you LISTEN TO.
